Wood Products Companies Use Innovative Technology to Cut Natural Gas Consumption by up to 90%

August 14, 2008, Portland, OR - As natural gas prices climb, businesses are searching for a way to replace outdated equipment that consumes high levels of natural gas and, in effect, is burning up their bottom line. An Oregon-based air pollution control company is helping wood products companies by providing a cost effective alternative to burning off air pollutants with scrubbers or thermal oxidizers. Bio-Reaction Industries manufactures innovative, environmentally friendly air pollution control systems that use microbes to digest hazardous air pollutants, volatile compounds and odors.

This biological process efficiently and effectively treats Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) generated from production processes. Plus, these companies also receive a tremendous add-on benefit of reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - literally by thousands of tons of CO2 and NOx each year.

"Wood products, chemical manufacturing and other industries understand the importance of looking at alternatives to their air pollution abatement equipment. They want something that reduces energy consumption along with greenhouse gas emissions," says Karl Mundorff, President and CEO of Bio-Reaction Industries.

By replacing high energy consuming thermal oxidizers, operations and finance managers at wood products companies across North America are greatly reducing their natural gas consumption and quickly realizing a dramatic savings in their operating costs - some as high as 90%. Looking at hourly BTU's burned, annual operating hours and statistics on air stream flow rates, a bio-oxidation system at a typical press vent application running at 100,000 ACFM will reduce natural gas consumption by 740,000 therms each year and reduce GHG emissions by 5,300 tons. These savings represent a rapid and measurable return on investment.

"These markets feel the pressure not only of global competition but of increasing energy costs. We work with customers to analyze their business costs and help them see the benefits of a bio-oxidation system. They quickly realize the value of converting to systems that improve their bottom line" noted Mundorff.

About Bio-Reaction Industries

Bio-Reaction Industries, LLC (BRI) pioneered a new generation of environmentally friendly air pollution control systems that utilize microbes to digest industrial pollutants and odors. Based in Tualatin, Oregon, BRI's advanced bio-oxidation systems cost dramatically less than thermal oxidizers to operate, do not produce additional greenhouse gases (such as CO2, NOx, SOx) and deliver the highest removal efficiency of any air phase bio technology in the world.
